Chapter Thirty-Two

Present Day

The cool, air-conditioned air brushed over me as I opened the glass door to Zones. It felt better than the July heat outside. I didn’t see Raymond at any of the tables as I walked further into the restaurant. The place was a little country. The tables were draped with blue and white linen, and the walls had a light wood varnish finish to them decorated with old black and white photos of rice fields and mills.

One of the mills attracted my attention straightaway. My heart sank with recognition. It was the Henston’s mill I had toured from the field trip. The one where I first saw Rett. I made a complete fool of myself that day.

A woman dressed in a red buttoned shirt must have noticed me gawking at the photos on the wall and approached me. “Hello. Will you be dining in or will it be takeout?”

“In,” I answered, turning to face her. “Actually, I am meeting with someone for lunch.” I kinda stumbled, then caught myself.

Stupid weed.

“Are you alright, hon?” she asked with concern.

“Yes. Just a little warm,” I replied, smiling and probably looking all the more stoned.

“Come. Let’s get you seated. I’ll bring you a glass of water while you wait for your companion.”

She turned from me and snatched a menu from the nearby podium. I followed her to a booth and sat facing the entrance of the restaurant. This would give me full view of the space for whenever Raymond showed up.

“Thanks,” I said when she handed me the menu.

“Sure, hon. I’ll be right back with your water.”

I eyed the menu. My mouth started to water from reading the lists of food. Stuffed crab, blackened chicken, and so much more to choose from. This wasn’t what I expected to encounter at all. I thought this was a burger place. My mistake.

A small basket of bread rolls was set on the table with a tall glass of ice water. I looked to see the smiling waitress again.

She handed me a straw and asked, “Would you like to start with an appetizer?”

“The bread will be fine for now,” I told her.

“Very well, I’ll keep watch for your guest to arrive,” she said, then strolled away.

My stomach rumbled at the smell of the buttered bread rolls. I picked one up, peeled a piece from it, then took the bite into my mouth.

“Mmm,” I moaned with my eyes shut, enjoying the goodness. “So good,” I whispered.

I hadn’t had breakfast or coffee this morning. I was too busy rushing out of the house, not to be caught escaping. I was lucky to get away unscathed by climbing the tree.

My body still felt the effect of the joint I had smoked earlier, but the water and food was helping it subside.

By the time I was halfway done with the second roll, Raymond appeared in the doorway. His jawline hadn’t been shaved and his hair was messed up. If he’d not been dressed well in a light green t-shirt and dark jeans, one would have thought he hadn’t slept in days.
